With San Diego Comic Con taking place this week, it can be hard to see the news and event photos without wishing you were there. For Tomb Raider fans who couldn't make it to the event or a local community events taking place over the next few days, here's a list of things which you could do instead of following the SDCC and event news into longing thought spirals.
Obviously we hope that everyone attending, whether they're there as a community ambassador, a cosplayer, a YouTuber, a journalist, or they accidentally walked in thinking it was an exotic pet shop, we hope they're all having an amazing time; to be able to celebrate a mutual passion with other like-minded fans can be a really meaningful and amazing experience. But with any location-specific event, admittedly we're a little jealous too, cheering those guys on (YEAH, YOU EAT THAT BUG, STEVE!), but also a little jealous.
As this article is for the fans not able to attend the event, we're going to focus on the things that you get to do or experience as an alternative SDCC, a SDCC with pizza and cats and melting in front of your fan in your underwear while eating a bucket of ice cream being it's very Summer-y out there. Which is my favourite kind of SDCC.
Is There Air Con In Here?
Embrace your inner Lara Croft by going on an adventure in your area. Go do something touristy, head to the city if you live near one or just go for a trek. There's always something new to discover, no matter how long you've lived in the area. There are a number of games such as Pokémon Go or The Walking Dead: Our World that you play as you explore, or you can tune in to some Tomb Raider-themed podcasts such as current series from Survivor Reborn or older episodes Crystal Dynamics. Alternatively you can also listen to Jennifer Milward's Angel of Darkness audio book for the journey for that authentic Tomb Raider atmosphere.
Wait... Wait Did That Snake Go?
If you're wishing you were at SDCC, you're not the only one. Give some of your friends and favourite community contributors some love by supporting them. Whether that would be donating via their ko-fi page so that they will get some help with the financial side of their hobbies, or sending them motivational messages. It can be time consuming and a little stressful doing something that you know is going to be seen by an international audience, but even a nice word by a fellow fan makes it worth while. Take five minutes to make someone's day!
OH GOD THE QUEUES
So many fansites and fan projects have ways to get in involved and experience more of the thing you love. Whether it's level designers uploading their latest Tomb Raider creations on TRLE.net, websites such as Tomb Raider Cosplay allowing you to create your own album and cosplaying space on their site, or Nicobass' playable Tomb Raider II demo now being available to download. There is a lot to discover for the first time even if you're a long-time fan of the series.
Can I Bring Some Of These Bugs Back in a Doggie Bag For My Cat?
Bugs are somewhat of an acquired taste, but everyone loves popcorn. With the latest Tomb Raider movie now available on DVD, Blu-Ray and in digital formats, arrange a TR movie night. Whether you're staying in for a quiet night with some snacks and pizza, a romantic date night, or hanging out with friends, or whatever! Friends coming over is optional but the popcorn is mandatory.
Ah! THERE'S The Snake. We're Cool.
If you're seeing a lot of SDCC content, especially if you have other favourite games, movies and shows which have a big presence at the event, you may be looking for a nice distraction. One of my favourite YouTube channels to go to in this situation is Kitten Academy. The channel is run by a wonderful couple who fosters cats, and have done so for years, but only recently created the livestream who need something nice to watch. Plus it helps the cats get adopted! At the moment there are two litters; one family who is on their way to graduating and getting adopted in their forever homes as they're old enough, the other family was born in the past couple of days. If you need to zone out, if you're anxious or stressed, or just need a good distraction, that channel is perfect.
