To conclude the Square Enix Media Briefing at this year's E3, Crystal Dynamics took to the stage to reveal the first gameplay footage for their latest project in collaboration with Eidos Montréal and Marvel Studios, a brand new adventure for Earth's mightiest heroes, Marvel's Avengers.
The fifteen minute presentation held on the Square Enix stage started with a three minute introduction to the premise; during the celebrations for their new west coast base, the Avengers' new and experimental technology becomes the target for a heist. During the raid, the technology goes into overload, leveling the city of San Francisco and taking down one of the team. Following the introduction Shaun Escayg (Creative Director at Crystal Dynamics), Bill Rosemann (Vice President and Creative Director at Marvel Games), Scot Amos (Head of Studio at Crystal Dynamics) and Meagan Marie (Senior Community & Social Media Manager) took to the stage to explain the new vision for the game.
Gamers were also treated to the first glimpse at the voice actors bringing the characters to life, with some familiar names! Troy Baker was announced as Bruce Banner (aka The Hulk), Nolan North voices Tony Stark (aka Iron Man), Travis Willingham plays the Thor, Laura Bailey takes on the role of Natasha Romanoff (aka Black Widow), with Jeff Schine picking up the shield to play Steve Rogers (aka Captain America).
Before the stream wrapped up, viewers got the expected release date for the new Avengers. The game will launch on March 15th 2020, for PC, XBOX One, PS4, and Stadia!
Throughout the week that followed, members of the development teams celebrated and shared their new vision, featuring familiar but standalone interpretations of the characters in a story which both pays homage to the work its based on and takes it in a new direction. It's also a game which is bigger than just a single adventure, with the project planned to continue in form of new content spread over the next few years, creating an adventure that players will constantly want to return and live in with friends.
The Avengers booth was inspired by the fictional A-Day celebration, adorned with balloons and ribbons. Glass cabinets containing life-size replicas of the new costumes dotted around the location bringing the awe factor. Despite the huge showfloor presence, the hands-off demo was shown to press behind-closed-door.
In addition to the demo, there were a number of developer interviews taking place across the event, with members of the Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix teams including Noah Hughes (Studio Creative Director at Crystal Dynamics), Vincent Napoli (Lead Combat Designer at Crystal Dynamics), Scot Amos (Head of Studio at Crystal Dynamics), Bill Rosemann (VP & Creative Director at Marvel Games), Shaun Escayg (Creative Director at Crystal Dynamics) and Yosuke Matsuda (CEO at Square Enix):
