[February 1st 2021] This year marks twenty-five years since Tomb Raider launched! And to pay homage to gaming's most iconic heroine, Crystal Dynamics have announced an epic and year-long celebration. From February onwards, the studio will be spotlighting each instalment of the Tomb Raider franchise with its own dedicated month.
Before the celebrations kicked off, developers at the studio recorded and uploaded an introduction to their plans, in a video featuring Meagan Marie (Senior Community & Social Media Manager), Neha Nair (Community & Social Media Manager), Dallas Dickinson (Tomb Raider Franchise Executive Producer) and Will Kerslake (Tomb Raider Franchise Game Director). In the video, they talked about their passion for the series and how they're going to be pacing the reveals/spotlights in a monthly format.
While the milestone is at the heart of Crystal Dynamics celebration this year, they also teased that they plan to "unify the timelines" by telling stories "that builds upon the breadth of both the Core Design and Crystal Dynamics games". At the moment, we don't know what that will entail, and it's a task that the developers know will be a challenge, as Will continues, "with Tomb Raider's extensive history, this is not an easy task, and we ask for your patience as we go through the development process." To ease expectations of the year ahead, the studio also explained that, for the time being, there are no plans for a new game announcement in the "near future".
The video concluded with Meagan talking about the recently announced news that Netflix is working with Legendary Television and dj2 Entertainment on a new Tomb Raider animated series. While we don't know much about the series yet, we do know that the adventures will take place after the events of "Shadow of the Tomb Raider".
